THE mother of a Scots soldier killed during the latest campaign in Afghanistan stood bravely on the streets of Wootton Bassett yesterday as her son's body returned to Britain.

Mary Walker wept as the body of Glasgow-born Lance Sergeant David Walker, 36, of 1st Battalion Scots Guards, was driven through the Wiltshire town.

L/Sgt Walker was repatriated to nearby RAF Lyneham, along with Lieutenant Douglas Dalzell, of 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, who died on his 27th birthday.

Both were both killed during Operation Moshtarak, a push to purge Taliban strongholds, on February 18 this year.

A private ceremony was held at the base's chapel before the men's cortege passed by the war memorial. Hundreds lined the streets of the market town in tribute, as has become the custom when soldiers return.

L/Sgt Walker was fatally wounded while conducting a ground patrol which was met with Taliban fire. As a section commander, he had played a vital part in Operation Moshtarak since February 3.

He was responsible for commanding and leading a four-man "fire team", engaging and reassuring the local population as well as defeating the insurgents.

Much of that success was down to his "extraordinary leadership and guidance", the MoD said.

He lived with his wife Teresa and their children in Glasgow.

His family said in an earlier tribute: "We are devastated by the loss of David, who was a terrific husband and father.

"We Chanel Replica Handbags are proud of the fact that David was prepared to do his duty helping the people of Afghanistan; he will be sadly missed by his wife Teresa and by all family and friends."

Lt Dalzell, an unmarried platoon commander, from Berkshire, died from wounds received in an explosion in the Babaji area in central Helmand.

Present to watch the cortege was Company Commander Major Simon Carpenter. He said of Lt Dalzell: "He was a sparky, professional young officer with lots of get up and go. He lost his platoon sergeant a couple of months ago. He took that in his stride. It was a huge devastating blow for the whole platoon.

"But he took it, carried on, got up and got his platoon going again. Unfortunately he has now made the ultimate sacrifice."

The repatriation services were held as the Ministry of Defence announced the death of two more servicemen.
